May 20 is World Bee Day. Various environmental actors from the Rhine-Neckar region want to use this occasion to set an example for biodiversity and environmental protection. At a joint "CleanUp+SeedOut" event, the Surfrider Foundation Baden-Palatinate, peer23 and Bee friendly, together with many volunteers, will clear the Neckar meadow in Mannheim of garbage, sow wildflower seeds and make wild bee hotels. There will also be information stands and a bee hotel crafting station on the grounds of the "ALTER" at Alter Meßplatz  in Mannheim.

May 20th is the day of the year when the whole world celebrates the bee and expresses its gratitude. The Surfrider Foundation, peer23 and Bee friendly want to use the occasion to make the Neckar meadow in Mannheim a more bee-friendly place. Together with many volunteers, the three environmental activists want to clear the Neckarwiese of litter and sow bee-friendly wildflower seeds at the "CleanUp+SeedOut" event. There will also be information stands on the grounds of the "ALTER", where children and adults can make upcycling bee hotels from old garbage.

“CleanUp+SeedOut": Mannheim becomes more bee-friendly on World Bee Day

„CleanUp+SeedOut“ am Weltbienentag in Mannheim

At the "CleanUp+SeedOut" event on World Bee Day, interested people can find out about topics such as water pollution, recycling cigarette butts and bee mortality at the information stands from 16:00. At 17:00, the "CleanUp+SeedOut" will begin, for which all participants will receive tongs, bin bags, gloves and native wildflower seeds from the Surfrider Foundation and Bee friendly. The aim is to sow bee-friendly wildflower seeds while collecting garbage to create food sources for wild bees and other pollinating insects. After the "CleanUp+SeedOut", at around 6:30 pm, children and adults can make small upcycling bee hotels at the Bee friendly information stand, which they can then take home with them. Filling material, tools and instructions will be provided free of charge by Bee friendly.

Bee mortality: a dangerous developmen

Unfortunately, pollinating insects in Germany and Europe do not have it easy: the use of pesticides in industrial agriculture and urban sprawl have caused insect populations to decline by 75 percent in recent years. The so-called bee mortality has drastic consequences, as bees not only produce our honey, but also perform many other essential tasks on our planet. Honey bees, wild bees and other insects pollinate fruit and vegetable plants and thus form the basis of many ecosystems. This dangerous development can be mitigated by a few simple measures, such as the creation of food sources and habitats in the form of wildflower meadows and nesting aids.

About the participants

Surfrider Baden-Palatinate is a regional group of the Surfrider Foundation Europe and is responsible for water protection and water cleanliness in the region. They organize regular clean-ups, provide information on waste prevention and offer workshops on the topic of sustainability.

peer23 e. V. is a non-commercial, non-profit art and culture association that was founded in 2013. The main idea behind it is to provide socially and creatively active people with uncomplicated workspaces, studios, workshops and seminar rooms. The peer23 sees itself as a platform that promotes culture and subculture, particularly by providing space. The interdisciplinary exchange of ideas is possible and desired here. The result is a creative and social network that maximizes opportunities.

Bee friendly is a start-up from the Rhine-Neckar region that was founded in 2020. The three founders want to draw attention to the issue of insect mortality and biodiversity. In addition to educational work and workshops, Bee friendly sells sustainable giveaways, such as bee seed bags, which companies or private individuals can customize with their logo. Apart from environmental protection, the young company is also socially committed. For example, the bee seed bags are packaged in the Kurpfalz workshop of Lebenshilfe Wiesloch.
